La Chupitos Santa Barbara Concert reviews
Two Legends, one Show
Here is the rearranged version of the review with a few switched words:
Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers' are two Southern Rock Bands that co-hosted a show, defining the heart and soul of good ole' Southern Rock. To be able to join together and perform a show is fantastic. Well, for starters, there aren't any better. There was an opening act, and for the life of me, I cannot remember who it was. Nonetheless, he was good. He walked about 6:59 with an acoustic guitar, tuned a few notes, and played about 5 or 6 tunes. Skynyrd didn't come on until closer to 8, but when they did, the over-anticipation that filled Verizon Wireless Amphitheater finally came to an end. They started off with a tune off of their new album, titled "Last of a Dyin' Breed," which according to Johnny, comes out on August 21st. Really good stuff. Of course, no Skynyrd fan can happily leave a Skynyrd show without having heard Southern Rock staples. In the case of the fans at Verizon Amphitheater, they heard all of those, and more. The energy was a showcase of pure professional endurance by the guys. Given they hadn't performed in almost two weeks, I believe Johnny noted mid-show, so I tip my cap to the boys of Skynyrd. All of their songs were phenomenal, but one struck me more than the rest. "Simple Man". Johnny announced before the song started that it was dedicated to the troops overseas and their families. Not only that, but it was such a powerful version of the hit, not to mention the tens of thousands of fans singing along in every row from dead center front row. There was no bad seat in the house last night. Everyone got a taste of the same awesomeness put on by Skynyrd, before Johnny turned to the crowd and said, "I guess you wanna hear one more, right?" That "one more" happened to be "Free Bird". A great version at that. A fantastic piano part played by Peter Keys really added to the complexion of the overall performance of the song, and not to mention the solo of all solos at the end. What a performance by the guys. They exited, and a slight intermission followed, to allow the many crew members to switch gear in and out from Skynyrd to the Allman Brothers'. They came on about 45 minutes after Skynyrd wrapped it up, and it was something else. Just when you thought the night couldn't get any better, here they come, even Gregg. One thing that I didn't particularly enjoy were the numerous comments coming from behind me about Gregg. "He needs to hang it up". If only I had a nickel for every time that was said last night. Sure, he's aging, but who isn't. Sure, he might not be the same as he was 40 years ago, but who is? The point is, he's not doing it for the publicity. He's doing it (still) for the simple fact that he still loves what he was born to do, put on a show. I thought he was fantastic last night. Nobody can incorporate the Hammond Organ into a rock n' roll show like Gregg Allman, and make it work. What a legend. They played for about an hour and a half, maybe a little longer. Their version of "Jessica" really made for a lot of dancing around the amphitheater. Of course, that was the story of the whole night; dancing, laughing, singing, and really just having a good time with two legendary groups. Verizon Wireless Amphitheater was blessed by an awesome show, and hopefully they will both return next year, and if they do, I'll be there, and hopefully you will be too!
